Le monument est l'œuvre du sculpteur valencien Manuel Boix et a été inauguré le 19 septembre 1997. La sculpture rend hommage à l'hommage de Jerez à la personne qui a fait la grandeur de l' industrie du xérès tout en favorisant les améliorations sociales dans la communauté de Jerez.
Manuel María González Ángel est né à Sanlúcar de Barrameda en 1812 et mort à Jerez en 1887.
Il s'installe à Jerez en 1835 à l'âge de 23 ans et fonde l'entreprise viticole actuelle González Byass à Jerez. Conseillé par son oncle José , il donne le nom à la célèbre marque et fleuron de l'entreprise : TIO PEPE .
Manuel María a réussi à devenir le premier exportateur de vins de xérès . Il a fondé plusieurs institutions commerciales importantes et a collaboré à de nombreuses autres entreprises, dont le chemin de fer de Sanlúcar à Bonanza.
