San Matteo es una de las seis parroquias construidas tras la reconquista de Jerez en 1264.
La iglesia gótica de San Mateo es una de las más antiguas de la ciudad . El interior de una sola nave, con suelo de ladrillo, y las capillas laterales con bóvedas mudéjares albergan las populares y veneradas estatuas de la Virgen del Desconsuelo y el Cristo de las Peñas, del siglo XVIII.
La antigua entrada principal fue tapiada tras el terremoto de Lisboa.
De gran importancia son las capillas que se abren a la nave de la iglesia, en las que destacan los estilos mudéjar y renacentista.
