San Matteo è una delle sei parrocchie costruite dopo la riconquista di Jerez nel 1264.
La chiesa gotica di San Mateo è una delle più antiche della città . L'interno a navata unica, con pavimento in mattoni, e le cappelle laterali con volte mudéjar ospitano statue popolari e venerate della Virgen del Desconsuelo e del Cristo de las Penas, del XVIII secolo.
L'ex ingresso principale è stato murato dopo il terremoto di Lisbona.
Di grande importanza sono le cappelle che si aprono sulla navata della chiesa, in cui spiccano gli stili mudéjar e rinascimentale.
