San Matteo ist eine von sechs Pfarreien , die nach der Rückeroberung von Jerez im Jahr 1264 errichtet wurden.
Die gotische Kirche San Mateo ist eine der ältesten der Stadt . Der einschiffige Innenraum mit Ziegelboden und die Seitenkapellen mit Mudéjar-Gewölben beherbergen beliebte und verehrte Statuen der Virgen del Desconsuelo und des Cristo de las Penas aus dem 18. Jahrhundert.
Der ehemalige Haupteingang wurde nach dem Erdbeben von Lissabon zugemauert .
Von großer Bedeutung sind die Kapellen , die sich zum Kirchenschiff öffnen und in denen der Mudéjar- und der Renaissancestil hervorstechen.
