San Matteo is een van de zes parochies die zijn gebouwd na de herovering van Jerez in 1264.
De gotische kerk van San Mateo is een van de oudste van de stad. Het eenbeukige interieur, met een bakstenen vloer, en de zijkapellen met Mudejar-gewelven herbergen populaire en vereerde beelden van de Virgen del Desconsuelo en de Cristo de las Penas, uit de 18e eeuw.
De voormalige hoofdingang werd dichtgemetseld na de aardbeving van Lissabon.
Van groot belang zijn de kapellen die uitkomen op het schip van de kerk, waarbij de Mudejar en Renaissance stijlen opvallen.
