Estos jardines fueron inaugurados en 1830 . El nombre es un homenaje a María Cristina de Borbón-Dos Sicilias, esposa de Fernando VII.
Con motivo de la Exposición de 1929 y la posterior construcción del Hotel Cristina y el Hotel Alfonso
Los jardines se combinan en un diseño clasicista, junto con la variada vegetación, el estanque de clara filiación regionalista, la preciosa pérgola, el busto de Emilio Castelar, el paseo dedicado en 1981 a Vicente Aleixandre, Premio Nobel de Literatura, y el busto del poeta sevillano Adriano del Valle, junto a un pequeño quiosco donde hasta hace unos años había una completa estación meteorológica muy consultada por los sevillanos.
