Aquests jardins van ser inaugurats el 1830 . El nom és un homenatge a Maria Cristina de Borbó-Dos Sicilias, esposa de Ferran VII.
Amb motiu de l' Exposició de 1929 i la construcció posterior de l'Hotel Cristina i l'Hotel Alfonso
Els jardins es combinen en un disseny classicista, juntament amb la variada vegetació, l'estany de clara filiació regionalista, la preciosa pèrgola, el bust d'Emilio Castelar, el passeig dedicat el 1981 a Vicente Aleixandre, Premi Nobel de Literatura, i el bust del poeta sevillà Adriano del Valle, al costat d'un petit quiosc on fins fa uns anys hi havia una completa estació meteorològica molt consultada pels sevillans.
