La antigua abadía se encuentra en la localidad homónima de Saint-Avit-Sénieur, en la región de Nueva Aquitania, en el departamento de Dordoña, a unos 35 km al este de Bergerac, aproximadamente 50 km al oeste de Sarlat-la-Canéda, en el paisaje de Périgord. El priorato se construyó en un lugar donde, en la época de los merovingios, vivió un eremita llamado Avitus Senior. Fue un soldado al servicio del rey visigodo Alarico II, antes de retirarse como eremita.
