Orléans es una ciudad universitaria y una sede episcopal, con una impresionante catedral. La ciudad está situada a orillas del Loira.
El centro de la ciudad vieja está formado por la Place du Martroi, donde desde 1855 se encuentra una estatua ecuestre de Juana de Arco.
La atracción más famosa es la Catedral de Ste-Croix, construida en el año 1278. Se encuentra en el lado este de la Place du Martroi y fue edificada en el lugar de una iglesia más antigua del siglo X.
Aunque la ciudad ha sufrido mucho debido a los bombardeos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, numerosos edificios y barrios antiguos han sobrevivido.
