Orléans ist eine Universitätsstadt und ein Bischofssitz mit einer beeindruckenden Kathedrale. Die Stadt liegt an der Loire.
Das Zentrum der Altstadt wird vom Place du Martroi gebildet, wo sich seit 1855 ein Reiterstandbild von Jeanne d'Arc befindet.
Die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit ist die Cathédrale Ste-Croix aus dem Jahr 1278. Sie befindet sich an der Ostseite des Place du Martroi und wurde an der Stelle einer älteren Kirche aus dem 10. Jahrhundert erbaut.
Obwohl die Stadt durch die Bombenangriffe des Zweiten Weltkriegs stark gelitten hat, sind zahlreiche Gebäude und alte Viertel erhalten geblieben.
