Orléans er en universitetsby og en bispesæde, med en imponerende katedral. Byen ligger ved Loire.
Centret af den gamle by dannes af Place du Martroi, hvor der siden 1855 har stået en rytterstatue af Jeanne d'Arc.
Den mest kendte seværdighed er Cathédrale Ste-Croix fra året 1278. Den ligger på den østlige side af Place du Martroi og blev bygget på stedet for en ældre kirke fra det 10. århundrede.
Selvom byen har lidt meget under bombardementerne i Anden Verdenskrig, er mange bygninger og gamle kvarterer forblevet intakte.
