La isla de Mont-Saint-Michel está construida con bloques de granito o granulita. Le Mont-Saint-Michel estaba previamente conectado al continente a través de un delgado puente de tierra natural, que antes de la modernización estaba cubierto en marea alta y se revelaba en marea baja.
Antes de la construcción del primer establecimiento monástico en el siglo VIII, la isla se llamaba "monte tombe". Según la leyenda, el Arcángel San Miguel se apareció a San Aubert, obispo de Avranches, en 708 y le instruyó para construir una iglesia en el islote rocoso. Aubert ignoró repetidamente la instrucción del ángel, hasta que San Miguel quemó un agujero en el cráneo del obispo con su dedo.
La isla también aparece en el Tapiz de Bayeux, que conmemora la conquista normanda de Inglaterra en 1066.
El Mont-Saint-Michel y su bahía fueron añadidos a la lista de Sitios del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO en 1979.
