L'isola di Mont-Saint-Michel è costruita con blocchi di granito o granulite. Il Mont-Saint-Michel era in precedenza collegato alla terraferma tramite un sottile ponte di terra naturale, che prima della modernizzazione era coperto alta marea e rivelato bassa marea.
Prima della costruzione del primo stabilimento monastico nell'VIII secolo, l'isola era chiamata "monte tombe". Secondo la leggenda, San Michele Arcangelo apparve a San Aubert, vescovo di Avranches, nel 708 e gli ordinò di costruire una chiesa sullo scoglio roccioso. Aubert ignorò ripetutamente l'istruzione dell'angelo, fino a quando San Michele bruciò un buco nel cranio del vescovo con il suo dito.
L'isola appare anche nella Tapisserie di Bayeux, che commemora la conquista normanna dell'Inghilterra nel 1066.
Il Mont-Saint-Michel e la sua baia sono stati aggiunti alla lista dei Patrimoni dell'Umanità dell'UNESCO nel 1979.
