Saint-Gilles , también conocida como Saint-Gilles-du-Gard, es una ciudad y comuna francesa, situada en el departamento del Gard en la región de Occitania.Durante la Edad Media, Saint-Gilles no sólo constituía un lugar de peregrinación por la presencia de la tumba del legendario fudador de la comunidad de monjes, el rico comerciante ateniense Egidio, sino que también era el punto de embarque para los peregrinos franceses que iban a Roma y el punto de partida de los que procedentes de Italia y Arlés iban hacia Santiago. Por este motivo, en el siglo XIII se calcula que la población alcanzaba los cuarenta mil habitantes.
