Bretagne tiene una de las rocas más antiguas de Europa. La erosión de esa roca produce un suelo pesado y arcilloso. Ese suelo no es muy rico y es difícil cultivar en él. Excepto papas, cebollas y zanahorias. Francia fue una de las últimas naciones europeas en comer papas, pero Bretaña fue una de las primeras en Francia porque no crecía mucho en la tierra de Bretaña. Tienen aquí un guiso llamado "Ragoût de berniques" que significa un guiso hecho de nada.
