Brittany har en af de ældste klipper i Europa. Forvitringen af den klippe producerer en tung lerholdig jord. Den jord er ikke særlig rig og svær at dyrke afgrøder på. Undtagen kartofler, løg og gulerødder. Frankrig var en af de sidste europæiske nationer til at spise kartofler, men Brittany var en af de første i Frankrig, fordi der ikke voksede meget på landet i Brittany. De har en gryde her, der hedder "Ragoût de berniques", hvilket betyder en gryde lavet af ingenting.
