Bretagne heeft een van de oudste rotsformaties van Europa in de ondergrond. De verwering van dit soort rotsen produceert een zware klei-gebonden bodem. Die bodem is niet zo rijk en moeilijk om gewassen op te telen. Behalve aardappelen, uien en wortelen. Frankrijk was een van de laatste Europese landen om aardappelen te eten, maar Bretagne was een van de eerste in Frankrijk, omdat er niet veel groeide op het land. Ze hebben een stoofpot hier die noemt "ragout de berniques", wat betekent een stoofpot gemaakt van niets.
