El castillo fue fundado en 1188 por el rey Enrique II de Inglaterra y fue destruido en 1195 por el rey Felipe II de Francia. El sitio fue restaurado en el siglo XIV. El castillo fue posteriormente en gran parte reconstruido en 1433 por Carlos des Marets. El castillo está compuesto por un recinto cuadrangular con torres flanqueadoras redondas y un patio inferior adyacente. La gran torre oeste data quizás del siglo XIV y sirvió como el torreón. Se representan varios estilos arquitectónicos y se utilizan piedra caliza y arenisca en los edificios. Se ha añadido un bastión de ladrillo y varios otros edificios al recinto original.
