El mítico circo de Gavarnie ha sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO desde 1997 por sus valores naturales y culturales, que junto con los menos conocidos pero igualmente impresionantes y hermosos Estaubé y Troumouse son un patrimonio natural notable, sin duda los mejores ejemplos de los Pirineos.
El circo de Gavarnie, cuna del pireneísmo, venerado por los románticos, se eleva hasta 3 248 m (en el Pic du Marboré), su cascada (la más alta de Europa) es la más conocida. El conjunto formado por la Brèche de Roland (forjada, según la leyenda, con la espada del sobrino de Carlomagno, Roland de Roncevaux) sorprende y sigue despertando admiración. Las más orientales Estaubé y Troumouse son más vírgenes, más pintorescas pero igualmente grandiosas.
