La Grand'Place de Arras tiene más de 1 hectárea de tamaño, ha sido el mercado de la ciudad desde el siglo XI. Originalmente, el mercado estaba rodeado de casas de madera que a partir del siglo XVII fueron reemplazadas por edificios de piedra. La más antigua data de 1467 y se llama Les Trois Luppards.
El campanario se encuentra en la Place des HÚros (plaza de los héroes). Este nombre se dio después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial para conmemorar a los habitantes fusilados. En el lenguaje coloquial se le llama el pequeño mercado. Aquí se encuentran principalmente casas de gremios.
Entre 1668 y 1672, Vauban construyó una ciudadela en la ciudad. Debido a su mal elegida ubicación, se le llamó La Belle Inutile (la hermosa inútil).
Durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, Arras no estaba lejos del frente, por lo que fue gravemente dañada durante la guerra. Después de la guerra, la ciudad fue reconstruida. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, fue ocupada por la Alemania nazi en junio de 1940 durante más de cuatro años.
