Su nombre procede de la palabra "châtaignier" en occitano, árbol dominante en las Cevenas y el Monte Lozère.
El señorío de Castanet data del siglo XIII, pero puede ser más antiguo. En aquella época, era el señor de Hérail, co-lord parier de La Garde-Guérin y vasallo del obispo de Mende, quien poseía el señorío. Hasta 1550, el señorío fue hereditario, además del prestigioso derecho a ser señor de la Garde-Guérin. Fue Robert Brun quien poseyó el señorío a partir de 1550. La vendió el 14 de diciembre de 1571 a Jacques Isarn, de familia burguesa de Villefort.
Cada año, el castillo de Castanet ofrece un programa de exposiciones estivales abiertas al público. Actualmente se está preparando la temporada 2026.
