De naam komt van het woord "châtaignier" in het Occitaans, de dominante boom in de Cevennen en de Mont Lozère.
Het landgoed van Castanet dateert uit de 13e eeuw, maar is mogelijk ouder. In die tijd was het de heer van Hérail, mede-heer parier van La Garde-Guérin en vazal van de bisschop van Mende, die eigenaar was van het landgoed. Tot 1550 werd het landgoed geërfd, naast het prestigieuze recht om heer van de Garde-Guérin te zijn. Vanaf 1550 was Robert Brun eigenaar van het landgoed. Hij verkocht het op 14 december 1571 aan Jacques Isarn, een burgerlijke familie uit Villefort.
Elk jaar biedt Château de Castanet een programma van zomertentoonstellingen die toegankelijk zijn voor het publiek. Het seizoen 2026 is momenteel in voorbereiding.
