La abadía de Sainte-Glossinde fue fundada a principios del siglo VII por Glossinde de Metz. Glossinde, hija del noble franco Wintrio, duque de Champagne, estableció alrededor del año 604 un asilo dentro y cerca de las murallas de la ciudad de Metz, que pronto tuvo una gran afluencia. Murió seis años después, a apenas 30 años de edad. Su cuerpo fue conservado de manera rudimentaria en la abadía de San Arnulfo, y posteriormente, como reliquia, fue llevado primero a la iglesia de Santa María fuera de la ciudad y luego al asilo que ella fundó, ahora la abadía que lleva su nombre.
