De abdij Sainte-Glossinde werd aan het begin van de 7e eeuw gesticht door Glossinde van Metz. Glossinde, dochter van de Frankische edelman Wintrio, Dux van Champagne, richtte rond 604 binnen en nabij de stadsmuren van Metz een asiel op, dat al snel veel bezoekers trok. Ze stierf zes jaar later, nauwelijks 30 jaar oud. Haar lichaam werd in de abdij van Sint Arnulf gebrekkig geconserveerd, en later als relikwie eerst naar de kerk van Sint Maria buiten de stad en vervolgens naar het door haar opgerichte asiel, nu de naar haar genoemde abdij, gebracht.
