Un primer monasterio fue probablemente fundado por San Remigio, obispo de Reims, quien fue enterrado allí en 533. Alrededor de 750-760, el obispo Tilpin fundó la abadía benedictina en el lugar de la tumba de San Remigio, que se había convertido en un lugar de peregrinación. La abadía disfrutó de muchos privilegios reales y de varias propiedades en la región. Una abadía con el rango de basílica fue consagrada el 2 de octubre de 1049 por San León IX.
