Un primo monastero fu probabilmente fondato da San Remigio, vescovo di Reims, che lì fu sepolto nel 533. Intorno al 750-760, il vescovo Tilpin fondò l'abbazia benedettina nel luogo della tomba di San Remigio, che era diventata un luogo di pellegrinaggio. L'abbazia godeva di molti privilegi regali e diversi possedimenti nella regione. Un'abbazia con rango di basilica fu dedicata il 2 ottobre 1049 da San Leone IX.
