En los Vosgos occidentales, el fuerte de Bourlémont es un elemento importante del sistema defensivo de la frontera oriental establecido por el general Séré de Rivières a partir de 1871. Se construyó en tres años, del 15 de julio de 1878 al 15 de julio de 1881. Su protección mediante bloques de tierra de entre 3 y 7 metros de grosor debía permitirle resistir el impacto de los proyectiles disparados con pólvora negra sin sufrir daños.
Este fuerte ha permanecido en su estado original, lo que permite a los visitantes descubrir la hermosa mampostería y comprender la vida de una guarnición tal y como era a finales del siglo XIX.
