La plaza debe su nombre a la presencia de la antigua aduana Koifhus del siglo XV.
La Fuente Schwendi (1898) está ubicada en el centro de la plaza y está coronada por una estatua de Bartholdi del General Schwendi (1522-1583). Según una leyenda persistente pero falsa, se dice que introdujo la variedad de uva Tokay en Alsacia.
