La place doit son nom à la présence de l'ancienne douane Koifhus du XVe siècle.
La fontaine Schwendi (1898) est située au centre de la place et est surmontée d'une statue Bartholdi du général Schwendi (1522-1583). Selon une légende persistante mais fausse, il aurait introduit le cépage Tokay en Alsace.
