Anteriormente llamada Sainte-Croix, esta plaza se llama Chevert desde 1837. François de Chevert (1695-1769), que aparece aquí de cuerpo entero, fue nombrado Mariscal de Francia en 1744. La plaza está adornada con un medallón de bronce situado en la intersección del puente de Legay y el Quai de la République. Conmemora el acto heroico del partisano de Franc Tireur Fernand Legay. El 30 de agosto de 1944, cuando el ejército estadounidense estaba a las puertas de la ciudad, consiguió desactivar una bomba alemana colocada bajo el puente contiguo a la plaza, el único que podían cruzar los blindados. Un hito en la Voie de la Liberté recuerda el paso del ejército del general Patton ese mismo día. Verdún fue liberada oficialmente el 31 de agosto de 1944.
