Vroeger heette dit plein Sainte-Croix, maar sinds 1837 heet het Chevert. François de Chevert (1695-1769), hier ten voeten uit afgebeeld, werd in 1744 maarschalk van Frankrijk. Het plein wordt gesierd door een bronzen medaillon op de kruising van de Legay-brug en de Quai de la République. Het herdenkt de heldendaad van de Franc Tireur Partizaan Fernand Legay. Op 30 augustus 1944, toen het Amerikaanse leger aan de poorten van de stad stond, slaagde hij erin een Duitse bom onschadelijk te maken die onder de brug naast het plein was geplaatst, de enige brug die de pantservoertuigen konden oversteken. Een mijlpaal op de Voie de la Liberté herinnert aan de doortocht van het leger van generaal Patton op dezelfde dag. Verdun werd officieel bevrijd op 31 augustus 1944.
