Esta hélice es en honor a su inventor Frédéric Sauvage.
El ingeniero francés Frédéric Sauvage probó el sistema de propulsión por hélice en 1832 en una barcaza en el Ourcq.
El 15 de enero de 1832, en Honfleur, en el antiguo muelle y con una pequeña embarcación, demostró en un experimento público que la propulsión con hélice era tres veces más rápida que la propulsión con paletas.
Se le puede considerar uno de los inventores de la propulsión de tornillo aplicada a las embarcaciones.
