Cerca de Borrowdale, se encontró un enorme depósito de grafito, probablemente alrededor de los siglos XV-XVI cerca de la aldea de Seathwaite, que pertenece a la parroquia de Borrowdale.
El grafito es un mineral blando derivado del griego "graphein", que significa "escribir". Se ha utilizado para escribir durante siglos y también podrías conocerlo como la sustancia del "plomo" en tu lápiz.
Los locales lo usaban para marcar ovejas. Pero rápidamente se comenzó a utilizar en la industria del lápiz en la cercana Keswick.
Lo que es más peculiar es que este es el único depósito de grafito encontrado en esta forma sólida.
