Fue en 1618 cuando la cabeza del explorador y cartógrafo sir Walter Raleigh fue cortada, tras un segundo intento infructuoso de llegar a El Dorado. Esto ocurrió en el Palacio de Whitehall, que en ese momento era la residencia principal de los monarcas ingleses en Londres.
La razón principal fue que Raleigh atacó áreas que estaban reclamadas por los españoles. El embajador español presionó para que Raleigh fuera ejecutado.
Su cuerpo iba a ser enterrado en la iglesia local en Beddington, Surrey, el hogar de Lady Raleigh, pero finalmente fue colocado en descanso en St. Margaret's, Westminster, donde su tumba aún puede ser visitada hoy.
