Es war 1618, als der Kopf des Entdeckers und Kartographen Sir Walter Raleigh abgehackt wurde, nach einem zweiten und erfolglosen Versuch, El Dorado zu erreichen. Dies geschah im Palast von Whitehall, der zu dieser Zeit die Hauptresidenz der englischen Monarchen in London war.
Der Hauptgrund war, dass Raleigh Gebiete angriff, die von den Spaniern beansprucht wurden. Der spanische Botschafter lobbyte dafür, dass Raleigh hingerichtet wurde.
Sein Körper sollte in der örtlichen Kirche in Beddington, Surrey, dem Zuhause von Lady Raleigh, begraben werden, wurde schließlich jedoch in St. Margaret's, Westminster, zur Ruhe gelegt, wo sein Grab bis heute besucht werden kann.
