Het was in 1618 dat het hoofd van de ontdekkingsreiziger en cartograaf sir Walter Raleigh werd afgehakt, na een tweede en vergeefse poging om bij El Dorado te komen. Dit gebeurde in het Paleis van Whitehall, dat op dat moment de hoofdresidentie was van de Engelse monarchen in Londen.
De belangrijkste reden was dat Raleigh gebieden aanvocht die door de Spanjaarden waren geclaimd. De Spaanse ambassadeur lobbyde om Raleigh geëxecuteerd te krijgen.
Zijn lichaam zou begraven worden in de lokale kerk in Beddington, Surrey, de woonplaats van Lady Raleigh, maar werd uiteindelijk begraven in St. Margaret's, Westminster, waar zijn graf vandaag de dag nog steeds te bezoeken is.
