C'est en 1618 que la tête de l'explorateur et cartographe sir Walter Raleigh a été coupée, après une deuxième tentative infructueuse d'atteindre El Dorado. Cela s'est passé au Palais de Whitehall, qui était à l'époque la résidence principale des monarques anglais à Londres.
La principale raison était que Raleigh a attaqué des zones revendiquées par les Espagnols. L'ambassadeur espagnol a exercé des pressions pour faire exécuter Raleigh.
Son corps devait être enterré dans l'église locale de Beddington, dans le Surrey, la demeure de Lady Raleigh, mais a finalement été inhumé à St. Margaret's, Westminster, où sa tombe peut encore être visitée aujourd'hui.
