El pueblo de Buttermere se encuentra entre los lagos de Buttermere y Crummock Water en el Distrito de los Lagos, y está dominado por los picos de Grasmoor al norte y High Stile al sur. Las ciudades más cercanas son Keswick y Cockermouth, ambas a aproximadamente 10 millas de distancia.
