Originalmente un campo de prisioneros de guerra, fue construido en un terreno agrícola en las afueras de Malton a principios de 1942, por un pequeño contingente de personal del ejército que había viajado desde Castle Douglas, Escocia. Su tarea era construir un recinto de alambre de púa y erigir tiendas de campaña para formar un campamento temporal para albergar a prisioneros de guerra italianos que habían sido capturados por las fuerzas aliadas en el norte de África.
