La batalla de Queronea fue un enfrentamiento militar librado en Beocia en 86 a. C., entre el ejército de la República romana, mandado por el procónsul Lucio Cornelio Sila, y el ejército del Reino del Ponto, dirigido por los generales Arquelao y Taxiles.[7]
En el 89 a. C., Mitrídates VI del Ponto inició la primera guerra mitridática venciendo en el río Amnias a Nicomedes IV, rey de Bitinia, y en el monte Escorobas al legado Manio Aquilio, jefe de la delegación y el ejército romanos en Asia Menor. Al año siguiente, Mitrídates continuó expandiéndose por toda la península de Anatolia desde Frigia. Avanzó desde Misia y entrando en la provincia de Asia. Luego envió a sus lugartenientes en las vecinas Licia, Panfilia y Jonia.[8]
