Los primeros judíos se establecieron en Rijeka desde la costa adriática italiana en el siglo XV. La comunidad judía de Rijeka se estableció el 26 de septiembre de 1781. La primera sinagoga de Rijeka estaba situada en una casa de tres pisos. En 1901, la comunidad judía de Rijeka contaba con 2,600 miembros. La construcción de la nueva sinagoga comenzó después de que la comunidad judía de Rijeka recogiera contribuciones voluntarias para la construcción de la sinagoga. La construcción comenzó en 1902 en Via del Pomerio 31, y se terminó el 18 de septiembre de 1903. La nueva Sinagoga de Rijeka fue inaugurada el 22 de octubre de 1903. El interior de la sinagoga fue construido en el estilo mudéjar.
