Este castillo, llamado de diversas maneras casa fortificada o casa-torre, derivó su nombre de la licencia para acuñar monedas que se le otorgó a Carlingford en 1467 por Eduardo IV. Sin embargo, la torre actual proviene de épocas posteriores, ya sea del siglo XV o XVI. Se cree que albergó a una de las familias de comerciantes adinerados de Carlingford; sin embargo, la falta de una chimenea y la solidez de las defensas sugieren que, de hecho, pudo haber servido como una casa de moneda. En contra de esto está el hecho de que nunca se ha encontrado ninguna moneda acuñada en Carlingford.
