Ce château, appelé alternativement maison fortifiée ou tour maison, doit son nom à la licence de frappe de pièces accordée à Carlingford en 1467 par Édouard IV. Cependant, la tour actuelle date d'une période ultérieure, du 15e ou du 16e siècle. On pense qu'elle a abrité l'une des familles de marchands riches de Carlingford ; cependant, l'absence de cheminée et la solidité des défenses suggèrent qu'elle a pu en effet servir de monnaie. En revanche, aucun coin frappé à Carlingford n'a jamais été trouvé.
