El castillo de Ardamullivan fue construido en el siglo XVI por el clan Uí Sheachnasaigh, gobernantes de la región conocida como Cenél Áeda na hEchtge hasta ser despojados por la invasión de Cromwell. Se menciona por primera vez después de la muerte en 1567 de Ruaidhrí Gilla Dubh Ó Seachnasaigh. En 1579, Diarmaid Riabach Ó Seachnasaigh y su sobrino John pelearon entre sí en una disputa por el castillo, lo que resultó en la muerte de ambos. Diarmaid Riabach había adquirido notoriedad previamente tras traicionar a Richard Creagh, el arzobispo católico fugitivo de Armagh, a las autoridades.
