Le château d'Ardamullivan a été construit au XVIe siècle par le clan Uí Sheachnasaigh, dirigeants de la région connue sous le nom de Cenél Áeda na hEchtge jusqu'à être chassés par l'invasion de Cromwell. Il est mentionné pour la première fois après la mort de Ruaidhrí Gilla Dubh Ó Seachnasaigh en 1567. En 1579, Diarmaid Riabach Ó Seachnasaigh et son neveu John se sont affrontés dans un différend concernant le château, ce qui a entraîné la mort des deux. Diarmaid Riabach avait auparavant acquis une certaine notoriété après avoir trahi Richard Creagh, l'archevêque catholique fugitif d'Armagh, aux autorités.
