La Royal Hibernian Military School fue fundada en 1769 como el Hibernian Asylum, por la Hibernian Society, una organización filantrópica fundada en Irlanda en 1769 después de la Guerra de los Siete Años. La Sociedad solicitó al Rey una carta el 18 de abril de 1769 y la Hibernian Society se incorporó bajo una Carta Real el 15 de julio de 1769. La primera reunión de los Gobernadores se celebró el 6 de noviembre de 1769 en el Castillo de Dublín.
