L'École Militaire Royale Hibernienne a été fondée en 1769 en tant qu'Asile Hibernien, par la Société Hibernienne, une organisation philanthropique fondée en Irlande en 1769 après la guerre de Sept Ans. La Société a demandé au Roi un charter le 18 avril 1769 et la Société Hibernienne a été incorporée sous charte royale le 15 juillet 1769. La première réunion des Gouverneurs a eu lieu le 6 novembre 1769 au Château de Dublin.
