La historia del turismo de Killarney se remonta al menos a mediados del siglo XVIII, cuando Thomas, el cuarto Vizconde de Kenmare (Lord Kenmare), comenzó a atraer visitantes y nuevos residentes a la ciudad. La fecha de 1747 se utilizó en celebraciones recientes de 250 años para honrar la historia del turismo en Killarney. Una visita de la Reina Victoria en 1861 le dio al pueblo una cierta exposición internacional. Killarney se benefició enormemente de la llegada del ferrocarril en julio de 1853. El editor británico de directorios comerciales Isaac Slater anotó que había tres hoteles en la ciudad en 1846[16] pero para 1854, un año después de la llegada del ferrocarril, James Fraser nombró siete hoteles y describió sus ubicaciones.
