Vasto es un comune en la costa adriática de la Provincia de Chieti, en el sur de Abruzzo, Italia. Durante la Edad Media se llamó dGuastaymonis, Vasto d'Aimone o Waste d'Aimone. La Italia fascista llamó a la ciudad Istonio, pero fue renombrada Vasto en 1944.
Según la tradición, la ciudad fue fundada por Diomedes, el héroe griego. Las primeras reliquias arqueológicas datan de 1300 a.C. Histonium fue una de las ciudades clave de los Frentani, ubicada en la costa adriática, a unos 9 kilómetros al sur del promontorio llamado Punta Penna.
