La puerta fue construida en los siglos XIII y XIV, y en 1334 estaba dotada de un puente levadizo que atravesaba un foso. No se utilizó mucho hasta 1674, cuando se construyó el largo Portico di San Luca desde el centro de la ciudad hasta la Basílica de la Beata Virgen de San Luca, que se utilizó en la procesión anual de un ícono. A partir de ese momento, también se conoció como la “Porta Sacra” o la “Porta dei pellegrini” debido a su ubicación en la ruta hacia el Santuario de San Luca.
